Holiday Home Safety

The holidays are here, and among the silver and gold, tinsel and glitter, we also have the potential for safety concerns. Take extra caution this time of year when house fires are more common, according to the Red Cross.

Here are some holiday home safety tips to help your family feel safe through the holiday season and beyond.

Holiday Lighting Safety

Something you might take for granted is box instructions when purchasing holiday lights, but they’re there for a reason. Pay attention to the number of strands that can be safely connected, and never overload an outlet.

Before packing away holiday lights for storage, look for any damaged cords or bulbs that need replaced. Store by wrapping strands around a piece of stiff cardboard, as tangled lights can lead to damaged cords (and undue stress!).

If you enjoy the warm glow of lit candles, keep a 12” clearance for any flammable materials, and always extinguish before leaving the house or going to bed. Battery-operated flameless candles are a safer option, and should also be turned off when unattended.

Oh, Christmas tree!

How lovely are thy branches, unless they’re dried out because you haven’t watered in a few days. Fresh cut, live trees need to be watered daily, and always dispose of the tree when the season is over. Here in the Dayton area you can place your tree out for trash pickup on your normal day.

Space Heater Safety

When you have chilly spots in your home, you may like the added warmth of a space heater. The Electrical Safety Foundation International offers several safety tips for space heaters, including:

  • Inspect the heater and cords for cracked or broken plugs and loose connections before each use.
  • Keep space heaters on a flat surface at least 3’ away from flammable materials, and don’t ever use to heat bedding or dry clothing.
  • Never leave a space heater unattended. Unplug and store when not in use.

There may be other reasons why your home has cold (and hot) spots, and Drake Heating & Air can troubleshoot and make repairs.
